All the type 1 patients I have known have been on insulin pumps or multiple daily injections. Many type 2 patients on the other hand can control it with diet and exercise. Those who can't often have pills and (in the early stages following diagnosis) also injections.

A very close friend, colleague and mentor of mine was type 1. He had several daily injections but ignored dietary advice particularly where alcohol intake was concerned. As a result he suffered from glaucoma and went blind at the age of 35. He then stopped drinking but died four years later.
