Hubert De Burgh every time! The problem is that few in Dover have ever heard of him, let alone know about his life and times, or understand what he means not only to the town but to the country as well. Yes, he built the town hall ( as a hospice), but he also defended the castle during the seige of 1216 and 17, fought the battle of Sandwich, built the Constables Tower and, with William Marshal, was joint regent of England. Many years ago I wrote a book called 'Hubert De Burgh, Defender of Dover', sadly no longer in print but if you wish to know more about Hubert then get in touch.
    Phil.
