  Local Rotary Club Target of £10,000 for Help For Heroes & Local Heroes of the Future
  
  The Rotary Club of South Foreland is organizing Three Major Fund Raising Events to raise funds
  for Help for Heroes and the Dover Army, Sea and Air Cadet Forces.
  
  Two of these events will be staged in Dover Town Hall while the third, an ambitious Land's End to Dover Cycle Ride will finish in spectacular style on Dover's Seafront.

  First the club is honoured to be able to host Francesco Attesti, an Internationally celebrated concert pianist, on 6th April 2011 at the Town Hall.
  He will be playing works by Chopin and Liszt. Tickets are available from La Salle Verte, Dover Insurance Services and Cullins Yard.

  Secondly during the first week of May the Club is organizing a Marathon Cycle Ride from Land's End to Dover with a Spectacular Finish along Dover's Seafront. Members will be seeking sponsorship for the participating cyclists.

  Finally on 25th May 2011 the Club will be holding a Gala Dinner in the Town Hall with Guest Speaker Simon Weston. Hero of the Falklands Conflict.
  He will be speaking about his experiences in the Falklands and his rehabilitation following his horrific injuries.

  Proceeds from these three events will be used to support the Army, Sea and Air Cadet units in Dover and Help for Heroes.

  Well thats a tough one, Lands End to Dover...Good luck to them all with that one. I say a tough one but Im not speaking from experience you understand.

  Not wishing to deflect any thing away from the good cause
  there are a number of person's raising money for charities that take a cut.
  
  let me explain,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
  the geezers in the street raising dosh for st johns and red cross are a private company, the st johns gezzers take from your contribution
  10% in the first year 5% in the second should you sign up to give a d/d donation,
  that may not seem a lot until you look at the millions they raise it works out at millions they get for the private company so the funds 100% doesnt go to st johns.
  
  
  then red cross geezers thats also a private company, they attempt to say that 100% goes to the charity when in reality what happens is rather than red cross advertising via the tv they pay the private company a cut of what they would have paid to advertise on tv, so there still being paid out of your donations.
  
  
  
  i used to give freely to charities, until i discovered how 100% wasn't reaching these guys, and if i make a donation i want 100% to reach the charity.
  
  so im more reluctant these days.
  
  
  the help for heroes in this case is a good cause, but i noticed in ashford yesterday people collecting for them and wonder if that was a private company like that of st johns/red cross.?

  Keith, come and give your money to the Age Concern/UK shop, apart from rent etc the rest goes to Riverside, even our manageress is a volunteer. Without the shop I doubt if Riverside could continue as it does now, we raise in the region of 30% to 40% of their income.
  
  Barry, I hope you raise a very large amount for such a worthy cause.

  I realise that it can seem de trop when charities take money from donations to run charities, but how do you think they are managed? To raise funds, to deliver services, to run campaigns, all takes money and needs to be managed effectively. For a charity it is worth spending a few bob to raise many more bob or to target services or markets more effectively. You have to spend a bit to raise a bit more. I wish people would get real.

  No doubt someone will find out if the collectors for Help for Heroes are paid or voluntary. They have to buy there goods from help for heroes they then sell them to get back there cost's with a small profit which is not right when Help for Heroes started it was a donation for what you wanted now every think as a price its more of a business than a Charity, And I wont give unless it all goes to the Heroes,

  Things cannot run without some income generated. The bigger picture is that more is raised, more help given, more support gathered, if there is some outlay. The best way to raise more - to do more for people - is to do it effectively, and that probably means using a business model. Unfortunately things cannot run by expecting nice people to hand over enough money to do good deeds. If you want to really do more for people who need it, you need to operate in the real world.

  It's not that I mind giving to charities cos I don't and I always throw change into shaking buckets...mind you the local window cleaner was none too impressed recently but I think the more we,the general and now less well off,public continue to dig deep the less support successiive govts give the charities. It would appear its acceptable to send off these lads and lassies to foreign fields to implement the govts will but they then shirk their responsibilities towards family and relatives of the k.i.a or those wounded.
  
  It guiles me that they throw aid at India and China, 2 of the fastest growing economies in the world, but fail to take care of our armed forces leaving it to Joe Public to fill the gaps.

  someone who voluntary done the books for various charity shops told me that the amounts raised after money was used for funding the headquarters turned out to be derisory, the exception being the lifeboat people.
  
  the shop where jan works is the only one staffed entirely by volunteers and as far as i know only sells donated goods.

  Shops serve more than one purpose - flogging stuff is only part of their role, which includes raising awareness, public relations, and community engagement.

  I must admit to chatting with some of the customers, I just wish the lonely ones did not want long chats when we are busy.
  
  Howard, yes everything is donated we buy nothing in not even when we have our fairs or table tops.
