    Good news, and amidst the gloom we just don't hear enough of intrepid and inspiring people. Briony Balen, for example, has just achieved her aim of being the youngest person to ski to the south pole from the coast. She's 21, and spent her birthday and Christmas en route.

    Sq Ldr Downing, whom we so sadly lost through Afghanistan just before Christmas, was another person full of challenges. I'm staggered at what he did in a life that was far too short, and cruelly so.
