The National Health Service has become a bit like 'mom and apple pie' in the USA i.e. anyone who has any criticism against is the anti-christ.

I have always been lead to believe (and I'm not sure from where) that we spend half the amount per capita as in the USA for a better healthy scheme.

As part of the (reasonably articulate) middle class I have never had a problem accessing decent health care.

My youngest daughter however, having appendicitis and going to St Georges Tooting found it like third world provision.

I well remember taking an RYA course on First Aid run by a notable surgeon.

The scenario is 'you are half way between the Isle of White and Cherbourg and one of you crew appears to have a heart attack. What would you do?'

After giving the usual responses we were told that the correct answer was 'keep heading south in the hope of decent medical treatment'........
