12:0673804I note on Yahoo logging on, that Hasting`s pier has suffered a massive fire destroying more than 90% of it`s structure. I`ve placed this bit of news on here for two reasons. 1. This fine pier was completed in 1872, and closed in 2006, gradually falling into decay, (does that remind you of our problems?), yet Hastings from what I`ve seen over many years, still attracts alot more tourist`s than we do, so why was it left to decay? 2. The pier was owned, would you believe, by Ravenclaw, a company registered in Panama. Yes Panama, in South America!! Just makes me wonder who may own some of our building`s, and why they`re allowed to fall into disrepair.
Tell them that I came, and no one answered.

12:1173805i thought that the go ahead had been given to renovate it.

you are probably aware that hastings are a very go ahead council and clamp down on rogue property owners unlike ours.
they are also very heavy on anti social behaviour.

12:2073806It doesn`t look like a go ahead council to me Howard, the piers been shut 4 years, and a bit late on the anti-social behaviour as it was two yobbo`s who set fire to it. I don`t know much about this Ravenclaw who own it, whether they`re rogue property owner`s or not.

they have a proven track record of bringing derelict and disued buildings back in to use.
i doubt that a fire of that scale was down to a couple of asbo wearers, i think when the full story is known it will be down to something organised by someone with profit in mind.

13:0873811I thought that a Trust had just been set up to renovate the pier and were seeking £3½million Lottery Funding. Something on the news a couple of days ago.
At one time Hastings Council had said the owners (overseas) were not co-operating with the aspirations to re-open the pier.
So co-incidental the fire only a few days after announcing the hope to seek funding.

Hastings Council were in the process of compulsory purchase of the pier. Council Spokesman stated that Rvaenclaw had failed to turn up at court hearings and that council had made attempts for them to carryout repairs.
Sounds like Hastings using Section 215 Compulsory purchase.....What about Burlington House (foreign owned and from what I hear falling apart...window recently fell out, lucky no-one injured).
