This was apparently a wildcat strike called by the CFDT over a manning issue on the SeaFrance Rodin. This comes only days after SNCF announced a decision to grant SeaFrance €170m in fresh financing, subject to EC approval. It does seem as though the union members have a death wish although it comes against the background of several hundred job losses negotiated in order to qualify for the cash injection.
The strike could not have come at a worse time as their ships were fully booked over the Easter weekend as with the other operators. The docks were bursting and the SeaFrance strike necessitated Operation Stack being put into force. I was supposed to be doing a trip on the Maersk Dover whilst on leave, as I did on the Maersk Dunkerque the day before, to advise a contractor on integrating new equipment with an existing set-up, but I only got there by the skin of my teeth and he never made it at all!
