  EAST CLIFF ODDITIES - THEN AND NOW
  
  A circuit around the outside of Dover's main fortress to see the other historical sights that skirt around the famous Dover Castle. See the
  site of Bleriot's 1909 landing, the development of the Eastern Docks at the turn of the 1900's, the Royal Naval Seaplane Station and much more!
  
  CHARGE: £2 Adults, children free.

  MEET:St James's Church ruins, off Woolcomber Street, Dover (TR 323 416).
  DISTANCE: 2.5 miles (2.5 hours).

  Those 3 themed walks I created some years ago never saw the light of day - they were approved by Derek Leach (Dover Society - who thought all of them were very good) and Jon Iveson (DDC - etc. who also checked them for historical accuracy), but there were problems with the guides and public liability insurance, so they never got off the ground.
  
  I did ask Richard Mahony if he would like to take them on and run them, especially when he had permission to open up the Grand-Shaft, but that, as we all know, went belly-up and so it didn't happen.
  
  If the guided walks could be regularly taken, I would be happy for anyone to take them over, they all give a good account of Dover's diverse history: The ancient walls and gates, Our Napoleonic past and Front0line Dover.

  20 (hopefully) happy people today and nice weather.
  
  Roger - you should approach White Cliffs Countryside Project about the walks thay may have ideas of people who could do them and would be covered for insurance. Unfortunately we have enough on our hands with the Western Heights to stray away too much

  Have just found a photo I took of us catching our breath at the top of the climb up from Athol Terrace to the National Trust.
