Kent County Council plans to make £4 million by charging residents for disposing of building waste at tips.
The council aims to collect £4 for a black bin bag of rubble and £6 for plasterboard from residents at the 18 household waste recycling centres across the county.
There is set to be a daily limit of five standard-sized black bin bags.
KCC claims these costs will cover the price of disposal, treatment and haulage yet council officers predict at the current rate of use it will make profit of £2m.

I know KCC have money problems as they keep telling us they are struggling

, but will this be cost effective with increased fly tipping.

Typical KCC. More fly tipping, more costs for DDC . Time for a unitary call again. At least it would be joined up thinking. I despair at this detached lot & I spent 8 years as a KCC member. Just an overpaid gentlemen’s club.

Now that Biffa are running the tips, *sorry, household recycling centres* the cost of a minimum drop of commercial waste has risen from about £7 to £58+VAT. We used to dump our business waste there about once a week but now we are forced to use a contractor to collect our waste and recycling.
A few points to consider here:
1. By raising the cost so much fly tipping will surely have increased hugely.
2. KCC and DDC have no interest in providing recycling services for businesses because (to quote a KCC source a few years ago) Brussels doesn’t set targets for business recycling. So those businesses which take their mixed waste to the tip are sending all their recyclables to landfill.
3. DDC used to provide commercial waste bags for small businesses to dispose of their rubbish and recyclables. There was a modest charge for these bags which nobody really minded paying to stay on the right side of the law. Now that this is no longer happening, many small business owners just take their waste home and stick it in their house wheelie bin or take it to the tip in their car, so much of what was previously charged for is now disposed of for free.
4. The collection of waste and its disposal are performed by different contractors, leading to inefficiencies. Every Veolia truck going to the Whitfield tip is weighed in and out, recorded and charged for by Biffa.
You really couldn’t make it up.

If only enough people would have the sense to vote for a Green candidate. We could perhaps stop and turn the tide of this sort of stupidity. Martin Whybrow has been doing his best in Shepway but, even with his considerable abilities, he struggles against the Tory visionless hegemony.

I have mixed feelings about the Green Party, good parts in principle but look at the problems they have had or is it caused in Brighton.

KCC & DTC should be abolished just a waste of time & money .My mate lives in Austria where every few wks they can get rid of huge items like fridges ,Suites mattresses etc etc at no extra cost ,Result no flytipping & the Countryside is kept clean ..
