A couple of points. The girls grammar school, DGGS, has taken male sixth formers for some years. A Direct Grant grammar school was, until abolished by Shirley Williams, a grammar school that charged fees but which received a government grant if it scaled (reduced) those fees for pupils from families below a certain income and offered a number of free places; one sat a selection/entrance exam. After abolition, most DG grammar schools went "independent" - fee-paying without reflecting income apart from some scholarships, and also went co-ed - accepting pupils of both sexes to extend their market reach.
