What's the reason for the clamping?
Being untaxed? Or just exceeding an hour's parking?

Yes they were busy down on the seafront too. I don't think I ever remember anything being clamped down here before. Ticketed yes...but don't remember any clamping.

Going slightly off at a tangent one of my bugbears is parking wardens that only turn up near me on a Sunday morning very early. What happens is that someone comes home late on a Saturday parks on a double yellow with the intention of moving it first thing in the morning. Happened again two days ago someone just had their back wheels over the lines, certainly not parked dangerously.
The other 6 days when we have a bus service and delivery vehicles from Argos, Homebase, Jewsons etc impeded by illegal parking there is no sign of them.

They can't clamp for parking - these will be immobilised because of no tax and/or MOT. Interestingly the one on the seafront has a Northern Ireland registration - and it looks as though they may have recently come off a ferry..

They can also clamp serial offenders with a string of unpaid tickets.

I enlarged the sea front picture and I think it's a regular number plate, it's just that the photo is back-to-front!

Just checked on the DVLA website
The silver Volkswagen tax expired in 7th May and MOT 26th July.
The BMW's tax expired 30th April, but has an MOT until 9th September next year.

Here's a close up of the seafront car and number plate. Its actually an enlargement of the earlier picture...
you should be able to see the number plate clearer now

Oops, my mistake about the number plate
No tax since September last year.
How long until they're taken away or will whole roads eventually fill up with untaxed vehicles?

There were a couple of cars clamped by DVLA near us (1 in Victoria Park, 1 in Laureston Place) a while ago. They were taken away the following day.

When cars are taken away, owners are given the choice of paying what they owe (including towing and storage fees) or having the card destroyed or possibly sold. They will still get a summons or fixed penalty for having an untaxed vehicle on the road.
With the car on the seafront, you can still see the ferry loading thingy (whatever they call them) hanging from the mirror. I wonder if they have been abroad for a year and are unlucky to have got picked up as soon as they got back!

Here in France it is possible to insure a British car, keep the number plates and send a SORN to DVLA. I have heard of one or two people who have taken the risk of returning to England for a holiday and promptly had their cars confiscated because they have no road tax or MoT.

With ANPR cameras all over the place, it's hard to avoid getting caught out.
