I was thinking the exact same thing as I left my house at 5.30 this morning.
It was disgraceful to have switched off streetlights for so long, even some third world counties have street lights.

KCC are responsible. The lights were turned off to save money. They have now come up with this idea of leaving lights on and using new energy bulbs.Still not switched on Whitfield Hill.
A friend was moaning to me yesterday about her Council tax bill. The trouble is cuts are having to be made .Sadly a lot of people donot know which authority the money goes to.
On another thread people are moaning about the new proposed leisure pool.Where do people think the money comes from?We can only what we can afford.
DTC have grand plans for improvement but Dover residents pay high council tax.

Noticed they have recently been fitting new daylight sensors to the top of the street lamps around town.I think most now use LEDs instead of the older type light bulbs so they use very little electric so they should be able to afford to leave them now.

I do not understand why solar lighting is not becoming the norm.
Even a cheap garden version can give a decent light, once purchased they are free to run.

Jan the 2 main downsides of solar are the high initial cost and with reduced sunlight over winter the batteries can fail to charge enough to activate the light, which then makes them unreliable, technology is fast catching up though.

Leds use so much less and still give a good light, when they first come out they gave a blue sort of light but now you can get them in warm white so theres no difference. An example,i have a large stall which i use at various outdoor events, the old lighting used to draw around 2000watts,i,ve now changed over to Leds giving just as much light but only draw around 250-300watts,its a big difference.

Good the lights are coming back on Whitfield hill, far too dark and dangerous up there. Will be safer for those that have to walk too.
