How refreshing it is to be reminded that there is so much more to our species than engineering 'Smart Bombs' and conceptualising 'Collateral Damage'.
Earlier this evening on the QI TV programme the topic of the 'Strandbeest' came up. On display was a model of one such that was about 20cm (8") long and 10cm (4") high that had been sent in by way of a 3D Printer...

The last video above does not show the process, this one does...

Sadly the method shown here (over layering) is not the one I had imagined it to be, and (I'm sure) not the one used for the QI programme.
The method I had seen was of a tank of powder acted upon by two laser beams 'carving' out an object from a scanned object, rather like a 3D fax.

How does one even start that concept ? Very clever indeed.
As you say Tom, a refreshing change from inventing objects of destruction; mind you some miliatry wag will think of a use - probably a mechanical suicide bomber.

Just to say that the 'full length' episode of the QI show mentioned is on BBC2 just now, the sand beast makes it's entrance fairly late on.
