It is very good news that at least Brighthouse will occupy some of our empty shops. The town is desparate for empty shops to be used.
Brighthouse expansion has been in towns with deprevation (Dover not shown as opening soon but opening soon in Ramsagate. They . Interesting to read their website and Wikipedia.
They operate a "buy to rent" retailing activity being the trading name of Caversham Finance Ltd.
Wikipedia quote as under:-
"Customers pay cash upfront, weekly or monthly direct debit with no deposit and no formal credit checks with a charge of 29.9% APR.Customers can take payment holidays and return goods without incuring penalties.
The company's lending practices have been critisised for targeting the "poorest and most desperate families" and operating in the most "deprived areas" of the UK. Example of a Playstation 3 retailing at £299.99 ends up costing £701.48"
It seems being rent to buy goods they can be immediately seized with failure of payments and several complaints have been lodged re this.
Please do not get me wrong, I am not against anyone buying on credit terms but if only people would save to buy so many unfortunate families would not be in the plight they are in today. Also the high level of debt would be reduced.
