I picked up a couple of vintage magazines yesterday, Good Housekeeping 1959 and Woman's Own 1967. I love the averts and articles in them - The look in a woman's eyes when you buy her a new iron. We know what you want - a Bendix washing machine. What every woman should know about her first refrigerator - and the husband about to buy it!

I've had some emails about domestic things bought for wives and they are so sexist it's untrue; they make out the women were so pleased to be working for their "man" and have new piece of equipment to do so.
Thankfully, there's so much more equality nowadays and much of the equipment, even we men can use.

I can imagine. Nowadays the look in a woman's eyes when presented with a new iron for her birthday would probably be murderous!!
They are lots of adverts for cigarettes and the fashion pages depict people smoking so quite a change there as well.

All came with a promise of time and labour saving too which turned out not to be quite true! Does anyone feel they have more time on their hands now that they own many of these gadgets?

One should never buy knives as a present for anyone as it ''cuts off '' the relationship. Old wives tale but one I am not prepared to risk by testing and breaking.

Marek - When we were given a special knife for a wedding gift (! many years ago) my uncle said I had to give him one penny - to break the superstition ! (Which I did).

The tradition around Sheffield is to give a piece of silver back if given a knife as a present - I guess they thought being the centre of the cutlery trade they valued their knives more!

on the obverse side there was a period in the seventies when men received black and decker work mates and drills for birthday and christmas presents.
i am sure that a good bottle of malt whiskey would have been preferable to many.

I remember having to appear grateful when given hankies as a present!!! I suspect my face gave what I really thought away, never been good at pretending!
