Trading Standards are aware of businesses going from door to door offering to buy precious metals such as gold and silver. Whilst this is not illegal, members of the public should be aware that the price offered for their items may be substantially lower than the market value.
There are also businesses that occupy village halls and other community buildings for short periods of time and advertise locally to buy gold and silver.
Any business buying second hand goods in Kent needs to be registered under the Kent County Council Act 2001 and will be provided with a certificate of registration (which they should have with them). If the business is buying precious metals such as gold and silver according to weight they must use commercial scales that are accurately tested.
Prices for scrap metals are currently high and offers can vary considerably. If members of the public wish to sell any of their possessions it is recommended that they contact a number of reputable businesses to get several offers before deciding whether to sell or not.
If any members of the public or partner agencies have any concerns or information regarding persons purchasing from door to door they can report these incidents to Trading Standards via Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06.

13:5292306apparently the variation in what companies will pay for precious metals is huge, people are advised to get a few estimates before selling anything.
