There are lots of reasons for prayer. one is that it works. That may not necessarily be in the way we envisaged, though.
For atrocities over the past 2,000 years, I'd suggest that humans may have had a hand in there somewhere. If so, then maybe it's our own attitudes and actions we should consider first.
Questions like this are interesting, but one thing I'd rather think about is a faith like Vic's. What brought him to it? How does he know it is true? I'm NOT asking you to answer this, Vic! Instead I'm suggesting that if one is seeking some insights or even answers, an alternative place to start could be thinking about these things and why someone might have this sort of faith.
