Ghost stories

  I often read the channelislandforum.co.uk and came across this story about the old Convent next to our local Parish Catholic Church here in Jersey.I thought it may be of interest to Jeane and others and maybe prompt other forumites to contribute their spooky stories.Happy reading.
  
  "I'm looking for anyone that may have seen anything spooky at the old convent opposite St Matthieus Church St Lawrence Jersey.
  
  You see, I saw something there with a friend that in retrospect was so strange I would have disregarded it as a dream or a made up memory had a friend not been with me and seen the same thing.
  
  I would love to hear from anyone that could explain this one logically or even chuck some spooky stories my way. Here goes!
  
  We must have been about 16 years old, myself and a good friend were walking passed St Matthieus on our way back home we looked into the yard of the old convent and noticed a rather strange sight.
  
  At the time, the sight was strange not because it was spooky, in fact we did not relate it to anything paranormal at all. Just a bit weird. We saw this:
  
  There was one woman, one man and a horse... the woman was dressed in Nuns clothes, the man neither of us remember really but he was standing watching as the Nun was trying to lead the horse down into a basement at the front of the building.
  
  We stopped and watched from the road as this was quite comical to us, we joked about what Nuns wanted with horses and even said things like 'I could have sworn this place wasn't a nunnery anymore.' the whole thing was very strange, the horse was reluctant to go into the basement and we left after a few minutes just thinking we had seem something very strange.
  
  A while passed before we went back past the old convent but the next time we did we were in for a big shock... The first thing that was very very striking was that the front of the building was completely different... The 'basement' entrance was completely gone, no traces of it being there at all. In its place there were stairs going UP from ground level to a front door. It was completely different...
  
  Then suddenly it dawned on us how freakin' strange the whole situation was... We were in shock. We went home and asked my folks about it and they said it had been a convent but years and years ago. Something that had been a rather strange sight had gone from rather strange to very very spooky...
  
  My friend is very 'logical' he acknowledges that it happened and it was very strange but won't admit there isn't a logical explanation for it. (He just doesn't know what it is!) I on the other hand want to get to the bottom of this!"

  What a great story. At the risk of appearing like a fruitcake I have had a couple of similar experiences whereby buildings have changed and appeared different almost like someone has overlaid a kind of transparent image on them. They look the same but some elements are different. It has happened in Portland Place in London where the road suddenly became wider and the buildings though similar had different fronts. There were no cars just a lone horse and carriage and then it was back to the present day chaos of traffic turning into Oxford Circus. A pub in Hampstead called The Flask was another place it occurred (no I hadn't had that much to drink!) My view of the courtyard went misty and a dray horse and cart appeared with large barrels of beer and then it was gone again. One of my favourite stories about what I call 'time slips' is when I encountered a man from another time: I was in central London waiting at a bus stop, people were scattered all over the pavement, leaning against walls and standing in the road. A well dressed man appeared in a heavy dark suit, bowler hat, rolled umbrella and briefcase. I noticed him as he seemed a little over dressed in the heat wave we were having at the time and he seemed very 1950s in style. He strode up to the bus stop, stood next to me, and examined the timetable oblivious to the crowd around him. He wore several Masonic badges and a sash; again I thought it peculiar daywear for Oxford Street, but each to their own. I was looking at his badges as I am interested in the history of Freemasonry and was about to speak to him when a bus appeared. The crowd moved forward but the gentlemen remained exactly where he was. I turned back to ask if he needed directions as he didn't appear to be following us and he had vanished into thin air! I then realised he hadn't actually been there at all, there was no bus timetable for him to study, just adverts and he was dressed for another time period as that's exactly where he had come from. I had just witnessed a dead Mason who had somehow popped in to....I'm not sure exactly what, but he was an amazing sight and well worth missing the bus for!

  We were so poor when we were kid`s, we couldn`t afford laxative`s. Our dad used to sit us on the pot and tell us ghost stories.
  Tell them that I came, and no one answered.

  I used to smoke Woodbines as well - when I was about 10. Later I progressed on Boars Head rolling tobacco; apparantly it smelt like camel sh**.

  Sorry about the joke above, but I heard it 40 years ago, and always think of it with the mention of ghost stories. Anyway, does anyone remember a couple of women, (sister`s?), on a BBC news programme, (Natiowide?), around the late 70s/early 80s regarding their experience in 1953 of waking up in the night to the sound of wartime bombing? Apparently, it was top news at the time. The war had of course finished 8 years before. Anyway, the BBC interviewed them, but I can`t remember anything else about it. Anyone remember that story?

  as an add on to colins joke, i still remember an episode of "steptoe and son" wherw harold was bemoaning that when he was a kid, all the other boys in his school were learning to play a musical instrument.
  
  albert just taught harold how to whistle.
