thought i would start this one as an add on to the history thread.
when i was at school this was a vague second in the boring stakes to history, again television makes it interesting.
that scottish bloke on coast for example is first class at getting something across in a clear but not condescending way, david attenborough(though not really geography) teaches us about the world around us with passion and eloquence.
even that travelogue with stephen fry has shown an america i would never have known about.

Geography wasn't one of the subjects I enjoyed at school. I often wondered why male geography teachers always wore cord trousers and jackets with leather patches on the elbows. Was it some sort of uniform?

Ah yes, Geography. A high wire strung between the Cheddar Gorge and the mysteries of Etangs. Oh, and Hywel Bennett.
Ignorance is bliss, bliss is happiness, I am happy...to draw your attention to the possible connectivity in the foregoing.

Geography wasn't my favourite subject at school, but I put that down to the teacher; not only was he dressed as Ross has described, but loved giving us pupils the slipper for the slightest misdemeanor - even the wrong answer would give him an excuse.
You are right Howard about those TV travel guides; I also loved the Michael Pailin travelogues and even Billy Connelly's travels in the North of Canada last year and this year's route 66.

Time to brag, I got an O level in geography.
I was fascinated by mountains and rivers, how they were formed and how the glaciers changed the landscape.
We had to do Geography and History back in the 1950's, the Tudor era being my favourite.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

the theme that runs through this and the history thread is that members took to or rejected a subject over the teaching.
it appears that some teachers have the ability to enthrall a class and others fall badly short.

Doctor Foster, Paul? Was he the one who:
Doctor Foster went to Gloucester in a shower of rain,
He stepped in a puddle up to his middle and never went there again.
