about this time last year a seagull appeared in next door's garden and was fed by the lady living there. this of course meant that he would come back for more.
she used to get home from work between 3. 30 p.m. and 4 p.m. the bird got used to this and started banging the cat flap until he was fed.
this year the lady has gone back to india for 3/4 months and her partner doesn't get home from work until 6 p.m.

the first day he arrived back he was driving me mad with the incessant banging, so after a while i threw over a biscuit.
he scoffed that and went off, done this for a few days then i was late home and he had dragged my bin bag around the garden spreading the contents around despite there being no food in.
now i have to make sure that i am in when he turns up so he doesn't do anymore damage.

Yes I made the mistake of feeding a seagull once and he has been coming back ever since. They are like elephants..they never forget..and knock on the glass of the window in very demanding mode..

Howard, I think you have made a friend for life now
Seriously though if you don't feed him he will get the message - eventually.....like in about 3 weeks........

for the sake of a quiet life i will continue feeding him jeane.
once the young are born he will be off anyway.
gulls strike me as being intelligent creatures, this one watches me from the rooftop when i am out in the garden, looks the type to rip up a few delicate bedding plants if i don't play ball.

One Sea Gull is now taking more fish out of our pond than the heron, infact the gulls chase off the heron.

let's take a step back here.
we all love herons but rarely see one, reg has one that he is continually trying to get rid of.
we all have problems with the herring gulls, beautiful creatures but too many of them and very loud with it.
it seems that reg is being punished by a higher being for his attitude towards the heron, and a plague of gulls has been visited on him.

If you want a heron I have a spare one. Caught him eyeing up the fish in the pond again - nettings back up and thinking of getting a decoy heron.

Howard, your comment: "once the young are born he will be off anyway."
Note: He may leave at that moment, but THEY will all be back !!!

no problem in previous years kath, should be even better this year with the wheelie bins denying them access to food.
besides they can always rely on the folkestone road tenement flats to provide loose food for them.

Nice one Howard...slight correction we both agree with the `food chain`but Wendy adores our fish pond and will protect
them at all costs.Today `the gull`,a big one, took a 12 inch gold fish and started to have lunch on the front lawn but swift
footed Wendy spoilt his lunch.
Unfortunately I gave my 12 bore`s ,16 bore and 410 to one of my godson`s,but I still have a .22 to bruise his behind.

I heard this very loud knocking on the french doors a couple of days ago and got up to investigate as I was worried that someone was knocking around the back
It was a very large seagull, he just kept on knocking his beak against the glass and staring at me. Strange, I have never had this happen before, will be borrowing your 22 bore Reg if he comes back

Birds are not daft; there is a duck in my local park that waddles over at tugs at trouser legs as it knows the 'cute duck' gets more food!

5.00 am....One duck swimming on pond....Fox walking up and down waiting for a `chance`
The duck swims round and round seeming to teasing him....10 minutes later Fox walks away hungry ...but right at the end
he turns around to see if he might try again......duck wins this time....
