Gateway Flats construction

I always assumed that Gateway Mansions were built in one go, but this looks like the Boland Wing was added at a later date ? Can anyone tell me what the tin hut or any of the other buildings were ?

- 22 January 2011 15:2989911Well that is a fascinating picture, well done young man finding that one...my wing is just fresh air..extraordinary. That looks like one of those old nissan huts once used by the military. Thats where Millers(The Premier Inn) is now of course. But before that when I moved in there was a block of nice looking flats there..Marine Court I think it was called. So the picture is before even they were built. They were demolished in quick time to make way for the new hotel.

- 23 January 2011 10:3389959My grandfather had a small part in the construction of the Gateway Flats. When the builders had a problem pile driving and one of the piles went off course, they called in the firm he worked for to extract the wayward column overnight. This apparently involved welding plates to the column, jacking it up, welding plates futher down, jack it up, and so on until it comes out of the ground.www.kenrbaker.co.uk - Photo Gallery
- 23 January 2011 10:4689960Yes Mr Baker that is still the way it is done today,I have done some like that to,my best job was pileing I done 3 copper dams at the eastern docks one at the western end alot in Folkestone and Chatham Dock yard and lots all over the UK and also I would cut them down aftewards great job out in all weathers 7 days a week and working with the tide,I think The boss has some photos of me working along the sea front when the big hole came.
- 23 January 2011 13:1389975They were built in one go and if I remember correctly it was from the middle out.
There is scoffold and a crane in the original photo Scotchie so maybe it was taken as they moved east with the construction.
