The Euro was never a well thought out idea and its inflexibility made it unworkable. I was reading the other day about Finland which I always thought was one of the most successful economies but for various different reasons including one of their biggest exports - paper, not being used as it once was before the digital age. If they had kept their own currency they could have devalued to help their exports.

Yes it does because our economy is much better managed than the EU's. The euro is the Deutschmark in all but name with fiscal and monetary policy being dictated by Germany. Weaker economies can't tolerate German policy disciplines so something has to give. In a sensible world weaker economies can raise interest rates and/or devalue their currencies to remain competitive but the PIGS countries can't so prolonged depression in those countries is inevitable.

Even more sensible when all these different countries in Europe with their own values in life decide what they want for themselves, not just a question of currency devaluation or interest rates but cultural differences.
