The story is also in the Guardian and includes this paragraph...
"Of the 43 forces, 23 have so far only submitted figures up to March last year in their FOI responses, meaning that, when all the figures are in, the total is likely to be significantly higher."

Bad when remembrance day parades are cancelled due to lack of policing and interaction between crime victims and police via Skype, whatever that is.

Maybe in future the 'police' as we know them will no longer exist, there will only be the murder squads and traffic cops virtually everything else will be covered by PCSOs or whatever they will call them by then.
As for this Skype idea, fine for those who have it, or still have it after their laptop etc has been stolen by the burglars that the police want to Skype you about.

That is mainly the way I see it Jan, back in the 90s football clubs were being charged a fortune by the their local force for policing matches when really the officers just stood around with little to do. The clubs decided to train up match day stewards and instead of having 200 police officers it only required roughly 6 to back up the stewards. PCSOs and community wardens can do a good job by listening to residents and passing any relevant information on criminal behaviour to CID.

More and more Remembrance day parades have been called off due to lack of policing, one village has not missed one since 1919. When a group of political extremists want to march the police fall over themselves to ensure that the demonstration goes ahead with umpteen times more officers than a remembrance day parade - strange logic.

Agreed Howard, disgusting to have to call them off while the police have no trouble almost outnumbering protesters at times.
Surely the answer is to make them unofficial, just a group of friends who happen to meet up and walk the same route.
