2006 at the Regatta, which was also DHB's 400 year Anniversary. The sun came out just as they got here.
Sorry can't remember the type of aircraft.

It is one of the BAe Hawks of the Red Arrows. They performed a stunning display at the 2006 regatta, as Roger says.
This looks like one of the synchro pair, the one coming the other way is depicted below.
John Vaughan took this atmospheric video:
Ken Baker took this superb head on shot:

Sorry guys! You are both wrong, yes, it is a Red Arrow over the harbour, but that is as close as you both got, sorry about that. I'll leave it up a little longer in case anyone else wants a go, just for the fun of it.

I would guess it was back in the 1980s I remember them flying along the valley over the railway track, must have been about the time the Queen Mother was made Lord Warden.

No idea about the plane, but isn't the picture back to front?

It's the Folland Gnat trainer.
I was on Brighton seafront in the 80's watching the Red Arrows display and saw one of the aircraft clip the mast of a viewing yacht. It just cleared the Palace pier and the pilot ejected; he survived but injured his back.......of course not filming at the crucial moment, but certainly unforgettable!

Jan, Bob and Ed, Was that a team effort? Yes, it's a Folland Gnat, yes, August 1st 1979 when the Queen Mother was installed as Lord Warden, Bob, following the accident at Brighton the Arrows displayed at Dover as an eight ship formation.
I was a freelance snapper on the day, working for the COI, the press pit was the cafe at the end of the POW pier, I still have my press pass! If my memory serves I would have used one of my three Nikon Ftn's, all on F36 motordrives, and with either a 300mm Nikkor or maybe a 80-200mm Nikkor lens, film was either Kodak Ektachrome or Kodachrome.
Now, back to the archive...............

My brother-in-law Stephen was at the Castle that day with his father. The Queen Mum came out of the door and there were just a handful of people waiting there so she walked along the line greeting them all. Stephen's dad was trying to hide behind him! Stephen exchanged a pleasantry with the Queen Mum about the weather.
