  Surprised that comments have not been forthcoming rebus drivers in the Brighton area being too friendly?Personally I think something is wrong when I dont receive a friendly greeting .I maybe Chairman of DDC but Im still called Sue Darling ,Love ,Susie etc .
  I dont like Dear .

  i have no objections to friendly terms though i think sometimes they can be used in certain situations to belittle someone.
  
  years ago a yorkshire council instructed their phone operators to stop using the term "luv".

  No, I don't like Dear, it sounds somehow very patronising. Love or Duck, or 'young lady' are usually appreciated !!

  I hate being called 'mate' by total strangers. For some reason I also hate 'darling'. Perhaps it's because my mother Always calls me that whether I deserve it or not!

  Clearly we all have pet likes and dislikes. Perhaps for that reason alone we should be addressed with more respect. Think about hospitals and care homes, for example, where elders who should be addressed respectfully unless otherwise indicated are routinely patronised and belittled with "endearments". I guess it is all in that option: respectful address unless permission otherwise is given.
