16:2875767I hear that the council are talking to the people behind Maidstone's Fremlin Walk - and this is exactly what Dover needs and deserves (and a big lurch upmarket to boot too, to bring in new people and tourists alike):

The right sort of scale, too.

16:4075768Here's a high aimer -
They shouldn't have knocked our original lanes down to start with to build the York St dual carriageway, which turned out to be only a temporary measure to get dock traffic round the town centre. When it was in the planning process a local architect put in a modified plan to raise the height of the road to save Roman ruins that were found during demolition for future generations. It seems to me that there's low enough traffic density to return it to a single lane and expose the remains to make a fantastic tourist attraction over the whole area.

17:5075780lovely idea, doubt very much it will happen.
the present idea of a massive flagship store being the anchor of the d.t.iz. seems the right one even though it does not appear to be working at present.
if say marks and spencer wanted to be the opening turn at the site, there would be a rush of companies wanting to join in.
with the lanes idea there would be many interested in opening smaller units, trouble is who would be the first?
i suspect that there would be a host of businesses all sitiing waiting for someone else to commit first.

19:2075813I have been banging on at the council and Bond City for years now about getting a French hypermarket to anchor the DTIZ. That is the only thing which will make Dover unique and attract people from all over Kent & Sussex.

23:0675835The Fremlin Walk idea is a step in the right direction - but I personally thing the idea put forward separately by both Simon Cowell and David Hanant of a "lanes" type development of small streets with small to medium sized retail units, flats above and pedestrianised areas to be much more fitting for the town

09:3975852Here's another one which successfully helped to regenerate a dying town which is now flourishing, not just with chain stores but also with a whole host of locally-owned small businesses, both in and around the centre. Not only did this stop local people going to shop in Coventry, Banbury and Birmingham, it actually now attracts shoppers from those areas.
