a lady down the road to me has started keeping chickens, recently bought my first batch off of her and have to say they do taste better than the free range eggs in the shops.
the thing i notice is that they are a variety of colours and sizes, very different to the uniformity of shop bought ones.
the thought has crossed my mind that we have a similar situation to fruit and veg in supermarkets and only the most attractive reaches the shelves. food waste has been in the headlines recently so thought i would raise this.

The Co-op sell free range eggs (different sizes) much cheaper, and they are excellent (I have kept chickens for some time but don't have them now). People here seem to want brown shells but they are NO different from white or pale blue shells. Free range for me was having them loose in the big garden, they keep more active and eat insects and worms which is good.

so that still begs the question what happens the ones that don't fit the bill.
i had an excellent poached egg this that came enclosed in a sky blue shell.

The key to flavour of eggs is quality chicken feed and freshness of the egg. Shell colour is irrelevant, so is mis-shaping. Once they are out of the shell they all look the same. The ones with dark orange yolks always seem to taste better but I don't think you could tell the difference blindfolded. I find the best and freshest free range shop eggs in Dover are from Veg for all Seasons in Cherry Tree.
