Philip, fracking is not the same as coal, oil or conventional gas exploitation.
Layers of rocks are shattered beneath the surface in order to extract gas, and the effect this has on the ground in time of an earthquake could be devastating.
It does involve pumping horrendous amounts of poisonous chemicals into the ground, which contaminate the underground "drinking" water too.

Water has been known to come out of kitchen and bathroom taps in flames, ignited by the gas, where fracking takes place, and people have been known to suffer serious symptoms from the gas, which evidently seeps up into the environment.
