Hello Paul.
I am on the beach at a very small resort south of Tulum (near Cancun) and find myself in the direct path of a hurricane. We have moved all the beach beds and boats. Boarded up all the doors. Tomorrow we will have to leave. The army are going to evacuate us and the nearby village of 300 inhabitants. The land and jungle here is only about 3 metres above sea level for miles around ! I wish I could stay and see the force of the storm but unfortunately they expect the only access road to be washed away.
Update tomorrow if we still have internet !
Electricity is supplied by solar panels but we have to pack those away tomorrow.

Perhaps the solar panels supplying the electricity have been blown away and are now circling in bits in the dusty desert somewhere beyond Cancun. But...Most of all lets hope all are well. Although hurricanes are fascinating in some ways, they are not really what you want on a beach holiday.

- 27 October 2011 15:37133575We are now in a little town called Tulum, a couple of miles from the coast. Its been raining a lot already. I have been told to stay in the hotel when the storm hits this afternoon at 14.00. All the buildings near the beach have been evacuated. Lots of police and army around, all with big guns. Last night because of the state of emergancy, no alcohol was allowed to be sold after 6 pm ! Even in shops. Luckily i had a bottle of wine in my bag.

- 27 October 2011 19:17133621Gosh that is pretty scarey can remember many years ago in America, being held up in a hotel because it was the tail end of a Hurricane outside, that was in my days of travelling so take care Andy and hang on to your hat.
- 28 October 2011 12:51133710All over, just a lot of rain. Not too windy here, it went over the island of Cozumel further up the coast. We lost electricity though. Quite calm this morning so time to move back and take down all the boards. I have been telling people about our "hurricane" in 1987 in kent.
