47 years a miner - a lot of dedication and some feat; my Dad only lasted 5 years or so, but that was back in the 20s.

Roger, he never did 47 years as a miner. The mines closed in the late eighties.
Gary will confirm this.
Dominant character in the mining community.
He had 4 years as a District Cllr from 1983 -1987. Never quite got used to it.

Reading the article again, it says he worked in the Kent Coalfields for 47 years, not the same I guess as being down the pit for that length of time.

he was indeed a very active figure within the mining community.
very passionate about how pits should have remained open
and not frightened to air his views.
he was a cllr and did ok but dont think that was realy his scene.
his passion and where he was at his best was in the mining communities
he will be sadly missed both by the mining communities but alsop trade unions in general
