For almost 130 years the proud supporters of Berwick Rangers have revelled in the fact that they are a British team playing in the Scottish Football League.
They call themselves The Borderers, and proudly display both the St Andrew's cross and the St George's cross on their scarves and merchandise.
But now the club's supporters have been told that they can't show the St George's cross when attending away games - because it incites sectarian tension.
Tom Maxwell, who wrote The Lone Rangers about the club's history, said: 'It seems particularly ridiculous when no Scottish fans get told to take down the saltire when they come to Berwick

Sounds a bit like those silly Councils who say we can't have Christmas because it "might" - it doesn't though, upset followers of Islam.
Have they investigated properly whether it does incite sectarianism ? I doubt it very much; if the Borderers have had that scarf etc. for such a long time, they should keep it and continue to be proud.
There's far too many parts of our tradition being whittled away because it upsets some people; in many instances, those objecting, are upset on other's behalf and again in many instances, those others aren't worried at all.

always a strange one berwick playing in the scottish league, they actually beat the mighty rangers in the scottish cup many years ago.
that bit about sectarian tension made me smile, at any old firm match celtic supporters wave the irish tricolour and rangers fans wave the union flag.

Group-think verses mob-rule, which leaves just about everybody at a loss as to what is going on.
However, the Saltire seems to be missing from the flag you have there Marek. Oh, I see it is on the reverse...

They are worried about sectarian tension at a Berwick Rangers game? are they serious when they allow at Rangers v Celtic games the Union Flag and the Tricolour, there is real sectarian hatred in those games but they are too big for the SFA to tackle so pick on tiny Berwick!

the mighty berwick have a home attendance of roughly half that of dover athletic, i suppose the away support could sit in 3 seats at ibrox or celtic park.

I just popped over to Wikki for a look see at Dover FC. Their badge I found reminiscent of a flaky pastry iced custard cake...nothing wrong with that.

could be a freudian slip tom, some of their supporters could be accused of being a bit flakey.

Roger, you are very right. I have been of the exactly same opinion for many years.
People saying, for example, that Christmas should be banned from British schools because it offends childen who are of different religions, are not speaking for these children or their parents.
Actually, I think it is only out of aetheism that they say these things and try to impose them, where-as Muslims, Hindus and Bhuddists are probably shocked that people can be aetheists, and would rather that we be Christians than non-believers.
They certainly do not want these no-religion laws to spread and be applied to their own culture, do they?
As for the English and Scottish flags, they both have Christian values, each being dedicated to a Saint.
I don't believe that the Scots would do anything to forbid English tradition in regards to the St. George Flag, so the talk about banning the English Flag all comes down to a colossal joke, or just somebody earning some money on a quango seat preaching some human-rights tosh!
Incidentally, I read today that the quangos have doubled their salaries, even though Gov. had promised to get rid of 'em.
