    David is right in that poverty in the 2000s is not the same as poverty as recently as even the 1950s, our expectations have rightly grown so what was a luxury then is a necessity now.

    We now expect things like TV to help entertain and educate our children while back then they were still luxuries while computers and broadband were not even known about.
