Dover Castle is known as a flag station for the nation, it is bound by home office rules and regs to fly the union flag from the highest point(normally the flag mast atop the keep) for 24 hours a day. These rules were applied shortly after the death of Princess Diana. Prior to this the flag was raised at dawn and lowered at dusk, by the castles security staff. Now the custodians on duty in the keep take care of it, they have a large selection of flags, different sizes for different weather conditions and they keep the flag aloft at all times unless told otherwise by the home office. Constables tower flys the deputy constables flag, the EH flag flys from Palace gate, and both the port war signal station mast and the church mast are empty. Taking care of the flag is just a small part of normal duties in the keep, and I have raised, lowered, changed and dipped flags more times then I care to remember, just why our mayor thinks that raiseing a flag will cost almost 4 grand a year is beyond me!
