When I booked mine the Receptionist told me 'Don't worry. It's only a small prick with a needle'.
Personally I thought it was rather a dismissive way to refer to another health care professional.

The report in the Telegraph is much the same as we read every year isn't it?
I wouldn't touch the flu jab with a barge pole, in fact the only time I did have one the following day I suffered from a 24 hour "flu".
If they're that effective I might reconsider the day my own doctor decides to have one!

I must say I always had the same view about vasectomies.
Unfortunately I had at the time a female doctor - hence the four children.

I have the jab a couple of times now with no ill effects so will give it another go. Had the Flu 25 or so years ago and was bed ridden for three days and took another week to get fully fit. When I hear people who have coughs and sneezes but able to walk around saying they have Flu I can only think they could never have had the real thing, it is an illness not a head cold.

The first time I had a flu jab it was for free because work paid. I think they were quite a new thing at the time.
I felt really (really!) bad for a couple of days afterwards, so subsequently decided to never have another one.
I'm now advised that the feeling bad for a day or two after a flu jab is both common and, particularly worth it this time, because this years flu strain will apparently completely floor you for about a fortnight.
So, Is this true? Or just scary sales tactics?
I ask because I can get a free one again because of a health condition. My local practice sent me a text reminding me of such a couple of days ago. But my work colleagues who have have recently got a jab have been moaning about the price.

You can also buy the service in Boots - I think the price quoted to me was £12, but included some kind of limited offer.

I also get the flu jab being an oldie and never had a problem not even a sore arm or sniffle.

Here's the data that the latest scare story in the Telegraph was based on (over a month old report! Slow news day?)
https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/641162/Influenza_vaccine_effectiveness_in_primary_care_1617_final.pdf
I would suggest that any effectiveness in oldies is not statistically significant since, apart from care homes where they drop like flies, most oldies are not mixing closely with the general population enough, at school or work etc, to get flu in the first place? Personally I'm waiting for a proper epidemic producing lots more data to see how many of the wrinklies are actually wiped out.
Notwithstanding I'm certainly having mine as it's free and certainly wont make me more likely to catch flu. The only downside is that if i DO catch flu, my carer will tell me it cant be flu 'cos I've had the jab and that it's only a man-cold etc.

Just been looking through the NHS website and it states that if the strain is different to the one(s) we are being vaccinated against then in all likelihood any bout of flu will be milder and shorter lived for those who have had the jab.

Thinking about the Captain's comment it could also be that us oldies possibly have already had one or more bouts of flu in the past so are immune to those strains.

You should read about the 'Piggy flu' scare when everyone was flying to get their jab says was a complete waste of time anyone taking the jab for this one. Pharmaceutical companies made millions though and no-one knows the long term effects of these flu jabs also. We but trust our government advice via NHS.
If only everyone could be kind and honest what a better world we would be in.

We have to trust our betters to know what is best for us health wise, if I was still working and travelling on public transport I would gladly pay out a tenner for a jab.
When I had to use the London Underground for work I was forever catching colds even in Summer, when I had a job where I could drive to work it was one cold a year at most. The only bout of Flu I can remember was when I used the Tube.

Your right Howard
I have medical masks, and tend to keep away from people and not just for flu outbreak
