EU referendum bill: MPs back in/out poll by 304-0
Tory benches packed after party imposed a three-line whip to support measure
The House of Commons voted overwhelmingly today for a Bill to hold a referendum in
2017 on whether Britain should remain a member of the European Union.
MPs voted by 304 to nil to give a second reading to the EU (Referendum) Bill introduced by
Conservative MP James Wharton. He brought in a Private Member's Bill to entrench in law
David Cameron's pledge of an in/out referendum after the Liberal Democrats refused to
support government legislation.
Tory MPs, including Mr Cameron and George Osborne, turned up in force in a show of unity
over the measure. Most Labour and Lib Dem MPs stayed away, and their parties abstained in
the vote. But several Labour Eurosceptics delighted the Tories by speaking in support of a referendum.
