'Tis a bitter pill, and therein lies the problem.

one of the more pleasant things i enjoy in summer is to put a scoop of ice cream into a large mug then top it up with a fizzy drink and now they want me stop me doing it.

'They', no matter who 'they' might be, do not want you to stop it Howard. They go further and wish all power to your elbow in enjoying your (very) occasional treat.
'Enjoying' it morning noon and night, day in day out, all year round, is what they are on about.
I did go into one about Aspartame a month or so ago, and included within all that I mentioned a natural zero-carb sweetener that perhaps we all should try.
I notice that this stuff is available, in it's over-processed form, from Tate and Lyle. (or was it Silver Spoon?)

P.S.
We used to have cream-soda and ice cream in a glass, but only rarely.

My mother used to love ginger beer and ice cream.
When I was young fizzy drinks were a treat unlike now where in relative terms they are very cheap.

The one thing that makes me laugh is the rather larger members of the town, going into places like Mcdonalds and KFC ordering the full works,, and then getting a diet coke to go with it, sorts of defeats the whole idea of a diet drink really.
