Five gymnasts from Dover Gym Club have become Kent County Champions in the annual Women's Artistic competition held at Tunbridge Wells.
Eight girls from the Club competed against 160 gymnasts from other Kent Clubs. Five won gold medals, one achieved a silver medal and one achieved a bronze.

Dover seems to vastly under report/acknowledge the success of its young athletes & sports people.
Vista Twisters is another example of a really successful group.

Excellent post Mel none of us would have known of the gymnastics if it hadn't been reported here and that our member "Wazzer" hadn't bigged up the cheer leaders that are Vista Twisters.

Great to see this Dover has in the pass had some very good sports both men and women when I was younger and run the boxing club we had lads boxing for England ,Young A Hayes was a very good boxer and could have made big time ,but things did not go well for him as a young man ,we had both the Ramleys boys Luke who had over 300 bouts and was a very skilled boxer and Jayson who the public loved because he would always give 100% but he was not so good as Luke,we also had the Mills family Dads and sons boxing for Dover and kent,90%of all Dover Boxers also box for kent, Gary Spears still about now was also very skilled and was one of the best young boxers of his day. Some like myself turned to be a trainer after our time in the ring .Most of our fights were away from Dover and that was a pain I would come home from working in London for about 12 hours then back at nights there with the lads, Mr Neil Rix was very good and build us a new club still in use today. It is sad that Dover does not have a club today I could still help out but not with the training. We had two clubs at one time ,the Red Ensigh who had one of the very trainers in the UK at one time he was the Army best boxer Jimmy Mathews .And I was the Dover boxing club trainer in the end both clubs join up and I run it after Jimmy left Dover .He was a better boxer and trainer then myself, but we still had a very good club after he went I was the trainer and boxer with the club for over 20years.But it was the very good lads we had at that time which made it a great club. Turning out in all weather to train and box away at nights and weekends. So I hope the gymnasts will carry on for years to come the training is very hard you have to go to school or work and then turn out again .And to GET anywhere in Sport it is the training ,the harder you train the better you get good to see like the boxing they are getting county Champions.WELL DONE AND KEEP IT UP.

How long ago did Neil build the new club Mr Vic ? I bet it was before he was on the Town Council ?
See people put the Man down but he was supporting the local people long before he was on the council.
I remember all the local boxer you have listed and yes they all was good. Nice memorys.

Mr Neil Rix has done a lot for clubs and Dover and done most of it years before he went on to the council,He did not want to go on to the council at first because he had then like now lots of work on.but after we had a talk and I said that Dover needed him and that has turned out to be true,he is doing more for The town within the rules that the town council works then most before him.We could do with him on the district council and more like him.
