Taranis is actually a proposal for a reconnaisance aircraft and will only have a very limited offensive capability.

It is not a bomber and it is very presumptious to describe it as the 'best in the world' Vic when it has not even flown yet. The Americans have similar projects on the go at a similar or slightly more advanced stage of development.

This is nothing at all to do with party politics such research programmes are ongoing by the MoD and quite rightly too. This aircraft, if it lives up to expectation could replace Tornadoes but only in the recce role. Though the cost is high it is not high compared to manned alternatives of which only the Americans have something this advanced. This project has the potential to provide considerable value for money.

After this unmanned offensive aircraft are likely to follow in the attack role and after that in the air to air role. The latter are more problematical than recce.

As always counter measures will follow and these may well overtake the unmanned combat technology so I suspect that unmanned aircraft will never fully replace manned aircraft in actual combat whatever adherants think.
