The headline is misleading as I know Keith Langsford and the meeting he had with Ann and Peter was well before the Grtenfell disaster. I know the residents there are unhappy with East Kent Housing and would dispute claims of regular checks and tests. The contractor would be aware that the fire extinguishers should have been taken away two years ago but done nothing about it.

Must be about 12 years ago now that Keith used to service my hearing aid from his flat and then open the back gate onto the alleyway as a short cut home for me. I doubt very much that the gate has been opened since. Most residents have severe mobility problems and would have no reason to walk up the incline as the bus services to and from the shops run at the front of the building. I didn't see the bulletin Brian refers to but can well believe that the lock could be rusted up.

I doubt that in a real life threatening emergency the first thing you would hunt out would be your house keys, that gate could definitely cause problems.

Usually response from Mr Langsford (Note from forum admin: the post this refers to has been deleted). I understand your concerns however the regulations have changed and going to the papers and T V does not help your cause The gate was provided at the request of the residents . Because of fear of anti social behaviour .
I'm pleased you have such good Councillors .I have nothing but praise for one of them .I donot .know the new One

Perhaps Mr McSweeney should canvas opinion before claiming that the residents are unhappy with EKH. Most residents are unhappy with the actions of one resident, who is in the habit of making malicious claims against both EKH and DDC, and not with the managing company. Yes, there have been problems at St Monicas, but these have been caused, in the main, by residents actions, not by EKH or DDC.
As regards the key issue. The gate in question is vital in keeping the premises free from the flats being used as a thoroughfare. A claim that problems using the gate as a fire exit causing a crush, is quite preposterous, as there are only 3 flats that might consider using that gate as an escape route., and there is unfettered access to the front carpark.
The issue of fire extinguishers was resolved when EKH removed them from the properties. If some residents choose keep a fire extinguisher, then I would think that they should attend a course on the proper use of them, as using one improperly could cause serious injury to the user.
It should also be noted that very recently, EKH have installed state of the art smoke and fire detection systems in all of the flats at St Monicas.
Finally, The fire alarms are tested every Thursday without fail (much to the chagrin of my dog).

Makes me wonder if we will hear similar comments from politicians and council officers when they finally get around to a public enquiry about Grenfell Tower.

The fire extinquisher in the common parts of the Victoria Park block where our flat is were removed some years ago when a new alarrm system was fitted which I understood was in line with the current fire safety regulations. I wonder if it is the same at St Monica's?

That is my understanding too but East Kent Housing say they have removed all fire extinguishers as residents could easily use the wrong ones in an emergency. Quite right of course but they are still in situ.

If the one "in his flat" had cobwebs on it perhaps he should learn to dust a little better?
