Is this the shape of things to come (apologies for the title threads pun) in the UK as the right-wing True Finns party has emerged as the big winners from weekend parliamentary elections. Voters handed a massive boost to the anti-immigrant, anti-EU group whose support shot from 4.1 per cent in 2007 to 19 per cent - a 14.9-point rise.

The preliminary result - to be confirmed on Wednesday - leaves True Finns, whose agenda includes cuts to welfare for non-Finns and opposition to the country's funding for the EU package to indebted fellow member states, vying for a place in the governing coalition with 39 of the 200 parliamentary seats.

Finland's funding for the multibillion-pound scheme designed to fund bailout loans for countries such as Portugal was a key election issue.

True Finns' inclusion in the new coalition government remained uncertain yesterday because of its stance on the EU. If the new government adopted its stance on the bailout this could wreck the bloc's entire strategy to deal with the fallout from the 2008 bankers' crisis because it requires unanimous support from member states.
