I would have thought laying pellets at this time of year would be the best feed to help produce healthy shells and eggs.
Rats will always look for anything edible, peas and grain as well as bread.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

To my mind the thing is to feed small quantities of the recommended food then if all that is eaten throw some more. Many times I have seen people throw whole slices of bread that is just ignored by the wild fowl.
