My Favorite of the english raptors! This, Kath, is almost certainly a very hungry Kestrel. These would normally feed on voles, mice and earth worms and carrion but will, at need, take smaller birds. For over 20 years I faithfully recorded a Kestrel nest site at the castle and have seen tham take all sorts of prey. Take a look on my web site (address below), go to galleries - Kestrels to see more.
Hope this helps. By the way, it is a young Kestrel, photographed on the day if fledged, by my name, young Kestrels are often called Tercels, and they belong to the Falcon family.
