Well done with the poem there tom.
Ah yes oul Eric was a good solid comedy performer for years and years. A stalwart of early television..I say early..those days when we all at the beginning of time, got the mesmerising window in the corner of the room.. beaming out images in black and white. Eric was probably not known at all to the modern generation. He was as deaf as a post too as the years went on, but it didnt visibly limit his performances, he still generated lots of laughs, particularly in his comedy shows with Hattie Jacques. Very funny they were...but they feel like a long time ago.
He made several movies too and always did very well..playing himself basically.

Ah yes I remember those guys too..absolute aces they were. I thought of adding Derek Guyler to the post above, he had such a memorable rubbery face, but alas I couldnt recall his name for the moment. Its an age thing...

DG, played the wash-board, if memory serves.
Sykes played his part in writing for many of the comics through the ages too.

A very sad day indeed. Loved Eric, definitely one of the old school - no swearing, no racist comments, no nastiness, just great comedy.
RIP Eric Sykes.

Have to agree a sad loss of a very funny man, loved the silent film The Plank very clever, as said old school comedy at its best.

From today's Telegraph...
"Speeding Sykes
SIR - We were at an Eric Sykes and Hattie Jacques performance years ago (Letters, July 8) when, several minutes after the start, a couple entered the auditorium. Sykes stopped the action, stalked to the front of the stage and, after giving a stony stare to the late-arrivers, said: "Well I suppose we will have to start again."
The cast took up their starting positions and went through all the dialogue and action up to the couples' entry point, but at four times the normal speed.

I agree Kath. A wonderful funny film with lot's of famous faces appearing. Almost a silent movie. I show it to friends here in France who can't speak English and it doesn't need any translating !
