barrie is right about football being a religion to some, in the sunday times over 10 years ago this phenomenon was established with people finding their favourite club more relevant in their lives than organised religion that seemed to offer nothing.
crowds were growing despite ever increasing admission prices and the brand spanking new stadiums were viewed as the equivalent of cathedrals. inside houses the old religious stuff on walls was replaced by stuff relating to their club.
