8 months after it was closed unexpectedly and without prior notice, Eythorne Village Stores are due to re-open on the 20th December at 10:00am. Post Office services, which resumed from temporary premises back in August, are likely to move back into the shop in January as a part-time counter on a temporary basis before, we hope, resuming full time later next year.

Howard, you old curmudgeon
Actually, it was a well used shop during opening hours. It suffered from a problem around opening hours though, the owner who closed up and moved out without notice did not open it until 0830am and closed in the evening at various times ranging between 1730 and 1815 depending on how he felt. As you'll be aware, these are not the best opening hours for a rural retail outlet if it wishes to make a profit. The new owner is looking to opening hours more suited for a rural retail outlet.

We used it a lot. Our house is bang opposite, a few doors down from Neil's. Having to drive to Shepherdswell or Tesco for the daily paper was a pain in the butt. Hopefully it will now flourish in new hands. Certainly when we are back there we shall support it.

That is good news. When we lived in Tilmanstone we often used it and our newspaper was delivered from there via our local paperboy so I can imagine how awkward it will have been for those living in or near the village.

neil
when i first moved here there was a small convenience shop/sub post office at maxton that kept opening hours similar or worse than your previous village shop with much the same result.
round the corner to me there was a similar situation until a year or ago when it changed ownership, now we all know when it is open.

Great news Neil, a relief to many I expect.

Today Eythorne Post Office Services officially re-opened from the village shop. We kept PO services going since the shop originally closed (back in April 2012) by kind permission of the Baptist Church allowing a back room to be used as a Post Office for 3 days a week, but always wanted them to be back full time at the village shop. Rakesh and his family put a lot of hard work into getting themselves ready for the Post Office and started providing services again mid January, but this morning was the official re opening.
Pictures below.

eythorne bucking a national trend there, just goes to show how hard work from a shop's owner/s and local people giving full support that village shops can survive.
lydden doesn't have one and i am pretty sure the one in temple ewell closed a while back, i stand to be corrected on that though.

Good collection of pictures there. Charlie looks a bit dangerous with that scissors..
Always good to see life returning to the villages.
