  Ed my husband, Peter, would have agreed with your comments about those from outside the industry being "wallies". When he was with Sealink/Stena he used to circulate the odd memo from a fictitious P.Frankenheima about some of their ideas plus a few of his own . He had a wicked sense of humour that the office bods did not approve of.
