Ashes 2013-14: Stuart Broad propels England to dominant position
He takes 5-65 to reduce Australia to 273-8 at the close on day one at the Gabba
Broad's infamous failure to walk during last summer's Ashes series will make the England player a target for home supporters throughout this winter. Based upon today's evidence, they would be wiser to follow the example of Brisbane's Courier Mail newspaper, who urged supporters to ignore a man who, in tomorrow's editions, they will describe only as "the 27-year-old medium pacer".
Broad's name might not appear in the local press tomorrow, but it will be in the record books. A five-wicket haul - his first in Australia - proved once more than Broad loves to be at the centre of attention. He finished the day with five for 65.
When Broad returned with the second new ball to bowl the dangerous Mitchell Johnson, who made 64, and take his fifth, he held up the ball and pointed it north, south, east and west. How he would have enjoyed the boos from some sections that accompanied his celebration. How different might the cricket have been had Broad been affected by a streaky first over

No doubt the Ashes is right up there in the Sporting Calender, Broad had a fantastic day and rightly milked the moment, he will have bad days and boy will the crowd wade into him then

Audere est facere.

That spell by Mitchell Johnson has gone a long way towards winning not just the match but the series.
The question is, can England find the reserves of courage to build big enough scores to stand a chance of winning a Test or two?
They are more rattled than they like to admit and Australia are clearly out to bully us with verbal intimidation, backing some terrifying fast bowling - and it is working.
Adelaide is supposed to be a batsman's paradise so that is our chance to wear down Johnson and the other quicks.
Ordinarily I would say a draw would do after this result but with the lightning fast Perth pitch due for the Third Test, we probably need to win in Adelaide, unless we can somehow pull off a shock victory in Perth.

the rot started to set in midway through the home series, our players were clearly gloating over australian misfortunes and let it show. they started to ease up instead of going for the kill and that coupled with strange decisions by the selectors gave the aussies confidence by the end of the series.
there is a 10 day break before the next test which is good news as it gives time for the players to get in the right frame of mind again.
