Just returned from a battlefield tour organised by the arrse,we arrived Friday evening at our accommodation in the village of Longueval in the centre of the Somme, had a barbie then to bed. On Saturday morning off to Mons to see the sites of both the first and last shots of the first world were fired [only 100yrds apart], then off to see the memorial to the Canadian soldier shot by a sniper at 10 58hrs on the 11th of November 1918. From there to the local war cemetery opened by the Germans later taken over by the allies on of the few cemeteries that remember both sides.
On the Sunday we were lucky to be guests of a French archaeological society to go down a collection bunkers based on some medieval caves[the name of the village must remain unnamed as so far the scavengers have not got in] it was very moving as the remains of equipment left behind has not been tampered with. Then off to follow the route to the high wood one of the objectives in the battle of the Somme.
