When one signs on, Keith, after 6 weeks the Job Centre asks one to subscribe to a couple of these work agencies.
Most factory jobs - if not all - are advertised via work agencies.
So job applications to most factories go through the relevant work agency. When you don't receive a reply, it's the work agency that doesn't reply! The application never gets as far as the factory recruiter.
I love these little excursions. Here's one:
Part of standard covering letter:
...although I have no previous work experience in a factory, I am willing to learn.
I do not drive a vehicle, but there are bus and train connections from Dover to Margate (or wherever). Plus a few more standard phrases.
All letters sent off electronically every 2 weeks after midnight on the same day as signing on.
100% guarantee you'll get an electronic reply from the job website that your applications have been sent on to the recruiter (work agency).
100% guarantee they work agency won't ever reply, Sometimes they might send out of compassion an electronic reply (computer automated) that your details are now stored and should some other vacancy come up in the future, they may contact you. (hi hi)
The Job Centre know full well how it works, that you' never get a chance, and as long as you have at least four applications with names and addresses, they'll wave you through.
if you really want a job, say you can't speak English, then you may get one by mistake.
