Emerald Princess
- 12 May 2011 03:38105815Further to the excellent photos of the Emerald Princess on the front page, she is the third of these Grand class cruise ships that we have had in Dover. The lead ship, Grand Princess, is shown below. Next one down is the Star Princess. As can be seen they both have the distinctive Skywalker disco mounted on supports on the stern, giving them their nickname of Shopping Trolleys. The Emerald Princess is one of the later sub-classes and the disco is now mounted at deck level abaft the funnel as seen in the third photo. Sadly, this attractive design feature has now been removed from the Grand Princess as, amongst other reasons, it was casting a shadow on the swimming pool below.

The real view is as below. For the benefit of DDC, DTC, etc, the things in the front of the photo are called flowers and they come out at this time of the year.

- 12 May 2011 15:53105899Very interesting stuff there Ed as always. That bit at the back, now removed, I always referred to that as the ski jump bit. Not very nautical terminology I know and it was a very striking design feature, so its a pity in a way. But we mustnt keep the sun away from the worshippers in the pool area...
